Realities & Responsibilities
Realities & Responsibilities in Interactivity in Theatre
When interactivity is used in theatre, it's often accompanied by a blurring of realities: some illusion or obscuring of what's real and what's fiction. This topic examines that trend, asking why it exists, what it lends itself to, and what the potential moral implications may be. We also consider the duties creators and spectators have towards each other and the work.
Some discussions include:
- If a creator convinces a spectator that a fiction is reality, is that moral, immoral, or amoral? When does storytelling become lying?
- To what extent can and should a creator guarantee an experience, story, or anything at all to a spectator?
- How vulnerable are performers in interactive theatre? How can they be protected?
- How much responsibility does the creator have for the spectators' state of mind, and how much should the spectator be considered responsible for their actions during a work?
